A structural engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and ensuring the safety and stability of structures such as buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure. We use principles of physics and engineering to determine the forces and loads that structures will experience and design them to withstand those forces.
The general rule is that anything that requires a modification to the structure of your house requires the services of a Structural Engineer to prepare drawings for a structural building permit. Any signs of structural damage or distress to your home should also be reviewed by a Structural Engineer.
If you suspect there's an issue with your home, a Structural Engineer can review the issue and, in most cases, can provide advice on the likely cause of the issue, whether it's an urgent or non-urgent problem, and how best to remediate the problem. Some of the more common reasons we get called out include: new cracks developing in walls and ceilings, settling or heaving, cracked concrete basement walls and floors, for new egress windows, to see if walls are loadbearing before removing them, and to seek assistance with planned renovations.
Yes. The Winnipeg Building By-Laws require that when any modification (or addition) is made to any structural component of the building, the changes must be designed and sealed by a Professional Structural Engineer.
